Hi DJ,

I read The Shack last night for the first time. I thought it was generally interesting, almost "designed" for film. I enjoyed it, but there are echoes of what Tom posted -- the focus is more on spirituality than the authority of Christ.

There's at least one factual error (turtles have hard plastrons, not soft underbellies) and one sentence made me particularly uncomfortable: "Most roads lead nowhere." In the context of the passage (related to a discussion about The Way), I would've preferred "All other roads lead to death."

Also, I'm leery that the author Paul Young is not a member of any church as he doesn't believe in "institutional Christianity"; he states it "doesn't work" for "hurt" and "damaged" people, whereas I believe exactly the opposite, having seen "hurt" and "damaged" people become healed as they become part of loving relationships found in a church. But maybe the only church groups the author knows are the unhelpful kind, I don't know.

That said, it's a good read, overhyped by the cover blurb. No way this book's going to be this generation's "Pilgrim's Progress". In short, I'd recommend it, but not to new Christians. If your teenager is set on reading it, perhaps you could discuss the pertinent issues with him/her.

Tom,
Shalom Sanchez, a friend of ours and a missionary in Los Angeles, says there is a new religion every day cropping up in LA. The way to fight the lies is to tell the truth of our Yeshua. There is no way to combat all the feel good religions than with God's truth. His Word is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. Even within the body, unless we are careful to study and be disciples, we can fall for seemingly innocent "feel good" stories that lead us away from the worship of our only true Savior. God in three persons, blessed trinity. Speaking of seemingly innocent books, I have a problem with my teenager reading The Shack. Kate thinks I'm narrowminded. What do you think about this book? D.J.
